Professions
The Sims 3 Ambitions introduces professions, a sort of active careers that let us follow our Sims at work.
We can now become firefighters, architectural designers, stylists, ghost hunters and investigators.
Medical career has been updated and you can do some extra jobs out of the hospital.
To start a profession, you should click on the related building or use the computer or the newspaper.
You don’t have to reach a certain skill level in order to progress, but you have some responsibilities to satisfy.
Job experience bar increase as soon as you do a job. When the bar reaches the top, you get a promotion.
As classical careers, professions have 10 different levels. Working time is defined, but for investigators.
The payment is weekly (not daily like in normal careers) and you usually receive a bonus for every job done.
Available jobs are shown in map view and marked by special tags.
In career tab you can also see a new button that shows/hides the jobs on the map.

Self employment
While building your skills, you can decide to turn your hobby into a profession. To do that, you should register yourself as a self employer by using the computer, the phone or by clicking on the city hall. If you don’t have any skill, you cannot use this option.
Crafted items can be sold in the classic way or at the consignment store.
Available Self employment careers are the following: fisherman, gardener, inventor, painter, sculptor, writer.
If you have World Adventures you can also register as nectar maker and photographer.
Levels are 10 and you get a promotion when experience bar is filled. It is usually based on the amount of goods sold.
You don’t have defined working hours and the only responsibility is  money gaining.
Sometimes and while getting promoted, you can receive a monetary bonus.

Playing with professions in cities different than Twinbrook
If you are not playing with Twinbrook, the new city introduced by The Sims 3 Ambitions, you should enable “Edit Town” mode, go to lot bin and place the new community lots containing the firefighter station, the salon and the consignment store.
If you don’t have them in your city, you cannot start the related professions.
